Do you think that this would be a good business idea?
I love to cook and bake plus I’m on a gluten free diet. Considering there are so many people out there that have Celiac disease and/or are on a gluten free diet I was thinking that a cool concept would be to start my my own gluten free bakery business out of my kitchen. Would that be a good business idea? Does anyone think that there is any need for something like this?
My husband and I were talking about it when he came home for lunch and he thinks it would be great idea. He said that I should start working on a business plan and a possible name for the business.
I’m just not sure if this is something that would be a good idea or not.
I like the idea as it is something that is gaining more and more attention and dovetails nicely with the move towards more healthy eating and lifestyle changes. Provided you have enough population in your area (which I’m guessing you do) I also like the fact that you’re starting small and trying to grow.
Too many new business owners jump in with both feet, spend wildly on equipment, material, and advertising only to find that building a market and buzz around their products & services takes time.
Some things for you to consider:
1 – Call your local city/town hall and talk to the folks in code enforcement to make sure you have the proper permits and inspections done before you open. If you’re going to try to sell this to small markets, restaurants, and or specialty shops you are going to need the proper permits in place otherwise no one is going to want to deal with you.
2 – Work with your husband and put that business plan together. I’m all for jumping in the “deep end” of a business proposition but more businesses fail because they don’t have at least a rough idea of how their business is going to run.
3 – Define your market strategy. Are you going to make things for sale to local retail outlets? Are you going to offer your services as an at home chef where people can buy your items and then re-heat them? Are you going to offer classes on how to cook gluten free? A combination of some or all? Make sure you define what you want to do and focus on it otherwise you are going to be spending your limited resources on chasing a bunch of different strategies.
4 – Is there a market? – It’s great you asked the question here, but the real marketing study needs to happen with local businesses in your area. Ask them if they’d be interested in offering a line of gluten-free food in their shops. Be sure to identify your retail channels first (e.g. how are you going to get your product in your customers hands).
Good luck!
